if you run it empty, you cant just put fuel in it and drive away. you would have to bleed ALL of the air out of the entire system. and that isnt fun.

[/ QUOTE ] Yep it sucks and usually they won't just fire up with the air out, some diesels have a hard time picking up the fuel by themselves and will require running on either for a few seconds to get primed. Cummins motors actually start up pretty easy and I've even heard that a can of WD40 will work like either but only with a cummins, weird.

I have only ran out of gas once and it was because I was hammered down pulling one of our semi trucks(trailers and all but no load, still about 40,000lbs /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif)Pulled it all the way to the shop with my K5. I was low and didn't think I would've had to pull him so I figured I had enough fuel, luckely I ran out in the shop driveway leaving and not when I was pulling the truck.

Ether in a GP equipped diesel can cause some serious damage. WD40 does work on a 6.2 FWIW.

You have to disconnect power to the injection pump, prime the filters and get the air out of the lines on the low pressure side of the IP. Then once that task is done you have to crack all the injection lines, reconnect power to the injection pump and crank until you don't see anymore bubbles from the injection lines. Usually a lot easier on the starter to remove the glow plugs while this is being done.

My 6.2 didn't take that long the second time I had to do that...which was when I installed a new pump and injectors.

Stil, having to do all that on the side of the road would suck...and tow trucks are expensive.

I've ran out of gas plenty of times...but with the diesel I don't put off filling up like I used to.

When mine says empty it is really empty. At 1/8th of a tank it takes over 29 gallons sometimes...and that is cutting it a bit too close for my liking.

Of course when I fill it up it is way 'over-full' on the guage. It takes up to 200 miles for it to drop down under the full mark sometimes. From there it's a pretty straight progression towards empty though.
