RANT-If you\'ve ever swung wrenches, you will know THIS story...

Ok, so I start my job turning wrenches for this small-town shop yesterday, and my first gig is the t-case ujoint on the rear driveline on an 81 f*rd bronco. What a machine, barely runs, and the transmission is so sloppy that you have to 'guess' where the gears are, because it doesn't 'click' into gear. So, rig up on the hoist, and I start in...and in wanders the owner...no biggie. Until he begins to tell me how to change the ujoint. /forums/images/icons/mad.gif This dude stands right next to me during the whole process, lecturing me on EVERY SINGLE MOVE...telling me what tool to use, how to take the bolts out, etc, etc. **** YOU! If you know what you are doing, DO IT YOURSELF! In between dictating my work, he is telling me what an off road beast this thing is (box stock TTB bronco), how he built it from the ground up (silicone for a pinion seal AND a tcase output shaft seal. NO seals, just blue RTV) blah blah blah. I don't mind stupid people, as long as they leave me alone. Sorry for the rant, needed to piss and moan to people who understand...

I know Kalifornia is Kalifornia, but I'm just wondering, do y'all have those signs at your shop that say "due to liabilty/insurance reasons, customers are not allowed into the work area."

We have them mounted to saw horses so they can be moved around, people will move the sign out of the way and walk in the shop. Then well round them up and escort them to the waiting room. And they normally come back. /forums/images/icons/mad.gif For yrs I would stop working and walk away. When they left I would come back and start working. If they came back I would walk off again. Sooner or later they got the picture.

Ive met the same people over the yrs that know EVERYTHING about cars but pay us to fix it. I got into an argument w/ an insurance adjuster (well OK it was alot of adjusters /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif ) But in this instance, in no uncertain terms told him that "I had been doing body work since he was in grade school, that if he thought he could do it, theres 40 grand in tools behind him in my box.....HAVE AT IT!" He told my boss I had an attitude problem. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif Snot nose, know it all adjusters.... One of the many reasons I got out of body work.

One thing I loved about body work and people walking into the shop was when I would have 1/2 their car in one stall, the other 1/2 20 feet away, and the eng. tranny and suspension laying on the floor, and all the interior including the dash in a big pile somewhere near by. /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif When they would freak out, turn purple and start gasping for air, I would tell them that is why customers are not allowed in the shop, so they wouldnt see things like this. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

The trailer shop I work in does service and repairs too...we tell nosy customers that they're paying by the hour so it's up to them if i work or talk. If they decide they want to hover over my shoulder I stop everything and start BS'ing until they go away. The really pesky ones I get medievel and try and flash em with the welder or aim the grinder in their direction until they get the hint. /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

I did stay out in the shop and watch the guy putting my exhaust together... /forums/images/icons/wink.gif but I asked him if he minded and told him I wouldn't say a word unless he had any questions about where I wanted it routed. I may have been able to weld it nicer, but his bending was total art and a pleasure to watch. I bit my tongue and let him work...and if he would have been bothered by me being there I would have gone and had a couple cups of coffee in the waiting room.

    Shop labor rates:

    $50 dollers per hour
$65 bollers per hour if you watch
$75 dollers per hour if you help
$85 dollers per hour if you worked on it before

Labor rates may be adjusted according to type of vehical, owner neglect, any unusual sents emanateing from the vehical and/or exssesive accumulation of crap that may hinder access to the vehical.

    Thanks.

This is when You Conveniently, Drop the Yoke, or a Hammer on His Foot! When I used to Work Flatrate at a Dealership, this Trick Worked pretty Well.

What could the Guy do? He could'nt Sue, He was'nt Supposed to be in the Shop in the First Place, and the Signs Hanging around Backed up this Theory. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

/forums/images/icons/mad.gif /forums/images/icons/mad.gif /forums/images/icons/mad.gif What a bone head. I hate people like that. I had a person or two wander up to my truck while I was doing the rebuild and try to tell me what to do. I even had one guy accually go grab tools and start doing what he thought was right. /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif Let me tell you that didnt go over too well with me and he was no longer allowed near my garage.

Unfortunatly for you its your job and its not like you can tell him to piss off. Maybe the walking away trick would work.
You definatly have every reason to be ticked off. /forums/images/icons/mad.gif

I did alot of watching when I had my exhaust put on. A bolt got broke off in my stainless manifold in the process and I guess I kinda told him a tip or two how to get it out. Heat it up and pound out because the stainless can take that abuse. Then after it was all said and done, I told him he was a good man and gave him a $10 tip. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif Hopefully I'll get the same guy when I return to have my '82 done.

I usually don't get those custumers in becouse I work at a lincoln dealership(this equals know-nothings with too much money) Our estimators are good at bull-shitting the customers untill we're done with the car. When one does happen to walk in I'll see what he wants and then go to work on another car. They usually don't like to see their car sitting there not being worked on.
We get the ones that want every thing for free. This dent wasn't here, why didn't you fix this scratch(that is on the other end of the car), why is this paint faded. God, that is what pisses me off. %90 of our customers b*&($ about something.

I feel your pain...That same attitude extends to all service related jobs, but I think auto service is the worst...I talked to a guy with a K5 a while ago just to be friendly and invite him to the site...he got to tellin' me how his K5 was custom built from the factory with dual Lockers (special ordered cause his Dad knows someone)...custom this and that, anyways, he jumps in to fire it up...wouldn't start...so I jumped him off and he pulls toward the road to leave...nails it in the gravel lot and one wheel spins madly , the thing coughs and dies...so I walk over and tell him what a Forking Moron he is, laugh in his face, refused to jump him off again... I told him the best tool he could use on his Special Custom Ordered One of a Kind Inspector Gadget K5 was a gallon of gas and a match...it was a bone stock 82 w/ no front driveshaft, mud flaps, runnin' boards, and Really loud pipes...I was kinda embarrassed that it was a K5.... /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

I never really get my rig worked on, but when I do, for exhaust andstuff, I like to watch from a distance and maybe point out a few things. It might get annoying, but for things like exhaust, you want it to be right...don't really understand why yoiu would need to know how to change a u-joint, and if the guy knew, why wasn't he doing it himself??? I'm kinda friends with the mechanic at a place close to me, he would work on a lot of friend's cars and stuff, and we'd hang around there and he didn't really mind, got tools for him and stuff. Sometimes though, if thye wanted us out, they just asked for us to leave, only happened once or twice though.
