What did most of you guys do to prep the truck for a new paint job. If you sand it down, how far do you go? Primer, metal?

i honestly think if i did a paint job on mine other then what i have done myself already, i would do a 2 tone, leave the top metalic sky blue, and the bottom i would paint a shade of black, so it would be black and blue, hahaha.

My truck is beat and battered so bad I didn't even wipe it off before I painted it. I uses the cheap stuff from the local dollar store (flat black) that cost $1 a can. But it still shocks me that the paint has stayed on for several months now and doesn't even flake off /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif.

Sanded my hood down with a DA first with like 120 grit or something like that, and then 220 grit 'til it was smooth to the touch, then blew it off with an air hose and painted with flat black.

I went over it with a DA to rough it up then sprayed it with WalMart primer. That was a year ago and it still looks good.

This pic was taken 7 months after I painted it. It's been not quite a year now and i haven't lost any paint yet. If I do I'll just break out another $2 can and touch it up. My total investmant was about $23... /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I did mine with Krylon...... I even cleared it... It lasted a good time, no peeling, but it did fade.

this paint is now 5 months old, but hasn't been field tested yet. I scuffed of the dirt and roughed up old paint. put down some primer on rough sections and sprayed away. my daughter painted the flames, I did the black.

We did an el camino back in high school with a rattle can and then went over the top with clear. After a few years, the clear started coming off. All we did was scuff up the old paint some.

I did mine in black epoxy primer (check out off-road k5 in my signature link). more then the rattle can, but will hold a lot better too. if you got a spray gun a gallon goes a long way, and you can get the harder & the paint for $50 pretty easily.

I've really hammered on that paint job, and epoxy is known for sticking to things. I even sprayed the allum. around the sliding window frames in the rear, and it's been rock solid so far.

I'm scraped 4" broken branches down the side, and it didn't hit metal.

Knocked down the gloss w/ a Scoth-Brite and sprayed it w/ Rustoloum tractor paint. It hasn't pealed anywhere.
