Depends how you do it. If you reformat you WILL lose everything. If you just reinstall windows you may be able to keep your programs. Either way you should backup whatever you want to keep.

It depends what approach you take. If you opt to format the drive, yes you will lose install programs, and any data that lives on that drive. If you opt to install on top of an existing version of windows, you shouldn't lose your data or your programs. Just bear in mind that if you hit a wrong key or the install somehow forks up really bad, you may be forced to wipe and reinstall, which would make you lose everything anyway. There's not usually much gained by installing over the top, unless you have a system that won't even start and it's in need of repair.

    Backup.

back up all personal files and anything you do not have the disks for. Also if you have dial-up anything that was downloaded.

Real easy if you have a CD Writer or even better dvd writer

This is why I cringe when I work on someones box and the personal files are all willy nilly everywhere

I have my harddrives partitioned into eight parts. The main HDD is halved, half being OS and programs the other half being games.

The other HDD is six different categories, art, works, media, downloads, backup, and other

Anyway try to keep anything important organized and backed up
