rear axle

    my 87 k5 is makeing a thumping noise from the rear axle and grabs litely. worse in turns when giving it gas. but will still do it when coasting or going straight. when it gets real bad i can stop and back up and it will quit for a little while. it has a gov-loc, could it be trying to engage

    thats what ive been thinking all day. whats a good replacement for the gov-lok on a daily driver

    If it has a gov-lock, which you said it does, then that probably means that the gov-lock is about to crap out on you. Gov-locks are notorious for doing that. Common symptons would be noises from the rearend, and the gov-lock acting up like you are describing. Looks like it is time for a new rearend. You can just buy another 10B, or if your looking for something more heavy duty, or if you want to one day run bigger tires, go with a 14ff. They are a dime a dozen.

    Sorry, but there is some bad news. You can only put another gov-lock in a differential that a gov-lock came out of. Get a new gov-lock free axle, and put in a detroit. Best locker on the market.

    if you want to replace it then you need a different carrier. if it was me, i would put a open carrier in it, then put a lockright locker in it.

    If I was gonna set up gears I'd just put in a detroit.

    [/ QUOTE ]14 bolt FF. You'll need a conversion U-Joint, and the 8 to 6 lug adaptors.
