I am building up a 12 bolt for the rear of my Jimmy and was wondering what I should do for the rear. Should I put a locker, mini spool, or what? It is not a daily driver anymore, but will still see the street to get there. About 2 hours to get to the trails. I have driven a car with a spool, and doesnt bother me that both tires are locked together. I am just wondering what would be the strogest and most reliable. I would buy a new open carrier if I went with a mini spool, so I dont have to worry about the wear.

Well, in my opinion, the spool is cheaper, simpler, AND is also reliable, so I'd go with the spool. Simpler means less parts to break!

Thats what I leaning towards, but I dont know how strong the open carrier is. Can anyone help me on this? I have setup a lot of 10 bolts with mini spools in drag cars with no problems, but never in a truck, or in a 12 bolt.

Anybody? I am ordering the stuff up in the morning. I have to order the stuff up tomorrow along with the gears. I am getting a volume discount because I am going in with a buddy and we are buying 6 sets of gears, and some sort of carriers.

the spool's gonna do the same as a detroit if you stay on the trail... get on the road and the spool's gonna burn your tires up... Go with the spool and save 250 bucks if you do just trail!

I am not to woried about the tires since I have a road hazzard warranty on them. I will pop the tires before they wear out anyways. Rocks are real hard on tires.

I think the axles would be more likely to snap than the carrier failing...
I'd consider upgrading your axles and going with a carrier replacement to be 'safe'. A spool on the street isn't bad, unless you spend all yer time doing figure 8's in a parking lot.[IMG]

I'd probably just go the Detriot and be done. I've never been a real big fan of spool setups on anything short of a drag only car, but I know lots of guys who run them on the street and don't mind them as you say. Seen plenty of spool setups have their problems too, breaking and cracking. Either way it is up to you. No matter what you go with I would definetly go w/ some Moser or Superior axles shafts, a harden steel cap, and some ARP studs for the caps. Also you might want to look into on of the reinforcing covers from LPW, Summit, etc. Aluminum for heat and I have seen those thing make 10B's hold up through hell, all in all enough to sell me on the idea... the $130 some bucks is another question LOL [IMG]

I think I would go with a locker (full case) given the choices. Do they not make a full case spool?

Even if they made a full spool, I would have to run c clip eliminators. I dont want to do that. I am just looking to see how strong the factory case is, because I would like to save money buy jsut mini spooling it. How do the lock rights hold up in the case? Has anybody broke the case, not the spider gears?

I decided on ordering a mini spool and a new open carrier. The new carrier for the 12 bolt for 3.73 and up was $125. The mini spool from Strange was $113. The mini spool is made from billet steel and was heat treated. I dont think it will break. The only thing I haven't ordered was the axles. Who makes a good set of aftermarket axles?

I have Superior axles from Drivetrain Direct and they are awsome. Priced desent... a bit spender and a bit nicer are the Moser axles. I've always ran Strange axles in my Drag cars, but couldn't find any for my 12B (I don't think they make em for trucks [IMG] ), but you could check around.

Strange will make you custom axles. You just have to tell them all the dimensions. They start at 350 for a pair without studs. We use them in alot of race cars too. I was looking for a pair for a little less than that.

Mini Spool!!!!! You cant run a full spool in a 12 bolt without C-clip elims and you dont want to run them....
