Anyone ever seen these engines before? They sell them from Summit Racing. I called about the specs and the operator said 540 horse, 580 ft./lbs of torque for the specific engine they have in stock....he said they all dyno close to those numbers. Longblock for $5300.

the new summit catalog I've got shows the 496 stroker at 500 horsepower. Right below it is the World Products 509 which puts out the 540. I am thinking about the 496 for it's torquey long stroke, but it's advertised with a cam of something like 296/306 intake and exhaust duration....a bit too much for me. I know that's not at .05" but I don't know if it is in the range 218 @ .05 like I'd like it to be.

496's are prett sweet motors... although so is a a 509. I the 496 I built up was built to the guns and cost me a heck lot more then 5 grand. Another buddy of mine has a similar setup in his drag... well sortof... basically it propells a 6,000 lbs. ungutted (complete to the 3 rd seat and cheesy woodgrain paneling) 84 Buick Electra station wagon to 12.2's and still haven't gotten things setup up right. So they flat out go...

But then another guy I know runs a 509 in his Super Gas car he runs 9's all day long with it.

Yea, the 496 that lists as 500 horse is the one I'm talking about. The Summit guy said that they are all at least 500 and usually way above that...I couldn't believe it. He read me the specs right off the dyno sheet for one of the motors.

you can build a 555 BB for alomost the same money as the 496. and the you will be getting a lot more power. a friend of mine owns a machine shop and builds these.
