I have a 74k 5 with a 350 and 103,000 miles and runs good. Any thoughts on what the proper red line should be? My Chilton's manual sez max hp @3800. A friend sez 5000 should be safe. What do you think???

Stock harmonic balancers are only rated to 4600 rpm. This is the safe operating level. You can take it above that for brief periods, but the elastometer (rubber ring) disapates energy by means of heat. This heat breaks down the elastometer and the higher the energy levels, the quicker it breaks down. Safe bet is 4600 rpm as max.
