Repair the end of the axle housing?

I was given a 79 D44-8F that has damage to one of the holes where the ball joints bolt in. How practical would it be to have it welded and a bored out. I assume it's a tapered hole. I understand I can swap the parts (gears, axles, spindles) into the 44-5CF in my K5, but the older 44 uses 2 3/4" tubes vs. 3" on the newer axle. Is one housing stronger than the other?

Should I try to repair the axle or just swap the parts?
