Hi all.... Does anyone in the Bay Area (CA) know of a 'reputable engine builder???. I have a 76K5 350ci, that may need a rebuilt. I have been burned before on rebuilts and need some good info on this....I would like to go 350 with some torque. This truck is light to med wheeling..
ALSO, what are the smog issues if I were to go with fuel injection on my 76K5???
Thanks.....

go with a new 240hp GM motor you can get from billings chevrolet in milpitas. $1395 for an all new parts engine. while you are there pick up a copy of DRIVE magazine. in the back look for the small ads. Diablo Engines (forget the fone number) has a 3yr./50k warrenty on thier engines but are a bit more than an all new chevy motor.

On the new engine in milpitas, is this considered a 'crate' motor.. (long block) and whats the warranty?... I would love to axe the carb and go F.I.
Thanks all for the info!!!

Crate motors come with a 3yr/50k mi warrenty. Any GM dealer sells them, Milpitas has the cheapest around here. I just ordered one from SDPC2000.com and cost 1350(approx) shipped. Came here in 3 days and it looks great. Check out the banner on top of the page. The motor is rated at 250hp and I'm sure you can easily convert it to FI, with some cash of course.

By the way, where in the Bay are you from. If you still want to go with a rebuild, Lee's Auto here in Alameda has got a great reputation. My cousin had his 350 bored and built by them, they are well known.

As far as going FI, I'm going (79 blazer) to put the Edelbrock multiport FI system on mine. I think it's around 2K or 2500 or so. You don't need a lap top to program it. It comes with everything and it's MP instead of TBI [IMG]

Just stop in if you're in the area. The guys at the counter are very knowledgable. Just a warning, they aren't the cheapest in town but they're the best. What's your budget looking like on your rebuild. I'm asking cause having one rebuilt or beefed up can cost more than $2k. That is why I went with the GM Crate 350 for $1250, just arrived last week, Here's a pic And here's where I got it from: SDPC Crate 350
This engine is supposed to put out mor HP than the stock 350. Just another option.

It wasn't shipped to my door, I had to pick it up at a truck freight station here in Oakland. They ship it to the nearest station to your house. Right now SDPC is haveing a special on shipping, only $69. I can't wait to drop it in, just waiting for my new tranny.

Rod, thanks bro for the info on the CRATE... Im looking into this seriously.... I found out that I may have a bent valve and I may have to go through the upper end (new cam, valves etc....) I went to a shop in Fremont called Bay Area Automotive and diagnostics. The owner builds custom rods as well. He quoted upper end ~1500.00... I showed him the info you gave me on the crate and he said it was a great deal... With the added stuff like MSD, K&N, headers etc.. he said HP would be ~280-300.... He would install for 950.00....
Question for me is: Spend 1500 for top end work with no guarantee on lower OR ~2500 for a NEW MOTOR w/warranty....

HE will always get you out of the mire clay!!!

I went through the same thing you did... rebuild or crate motor. I think either way would be fine depending on your budget. Everyone I know and talked to that has the motor is very pleased with it. Its a helluva lot more power than the stock 350. Plus my truck is a daily driver, and gettin it rebuilt would've took too long. Just do whatever's best for you.
