I have a wonderfull friend ( ntaje*p ) who has offered to do my front gears but he is a busy man. i havent done them in years and remember when i had dont them i was doing Furds and it required a tube bolted into the saddles where the carrier goes to measure it . is this required for chev's?? i would like to do them and save Aaron the hassle and time... it is a front 6 lug booger /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: RING N PINION INSTALL question......need y\'alls help here

I believe you are reffering to setting the pinion depth. This is really the right way to set up gears, but it isn't totally necessary. As long as you get the three other settings(pinion preload, backlash, and pattern) set up correctly, then you will have the pinion depth real close. It takes a little longer to get them set up without setting the pinion depth first, but it can be done. Start out by using the same amount of shim depth as was on the original pinion gear. This should get you in the ballpark. Hope this helped.

Are you changing the carrier, such as locker, or the ring and pinion and carrier!!!? If the same ring and pinion are going in, you can use the same shims! Shims are for the gears, not the carrier! This is at least what I've been told, and when I rebuilt my rearend, it worked great, same gears, same shims! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

As Mr.Chevy said, you can set them up using just the pattern. We did it this way on my D60 and then got a hold of the tool to check the depth and we were only .001" off, so it's pretty much just as accurate either way. It's just more time consuming to do it with the pattern. The pattern is supposed to be the final check anyways, even if you use the tool to set the pinion depth you should run a pattern and adjust the shims accordingly by how it looks. The best instructions that I found are at http://www.ring-pinion.com/yukon-instructions.pdf

He means the yellow goo that supposed to smear in a pattern! It's supposed to be even and so forth, Not too sure how to read it though! I'm sure that article says it though!

Those are the best pics that I've found. Let me see if I can explain patterns... You want it to be centered on the tooth as much as possible, but more importantly than that, you don't want any pointy parts on it. It should be shaped like a jelly bean, not like a tear drop, understand?

I found the pics to be rather useless when I set my gears up, they gave me a general idea of what to look for, but none of the patterns that I got looked anything likethe pictures. Just notice the general shape of the pattern and you can kind of tell where you need to go. And post pics of the patterns that you get, the guys on here should be able to point you in the right direction. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

oh ya the pattern pics helped a bunch /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif i meant the other pics were hard to see. I can see Im going to have a hard time doing this without the pinion depth tube to use though. but.......the time to test the shaggy used carrier has come, and the r&p from Don, and the.....etc... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yes, you will still be able to get a good pattern. Just make sure you err to the loose side on the backlash. Used gears don't live very long if you set the backlash too tight.

Err, as in, if you make an error, be sure that it is too loose, not too tight.

All Dana axles use shims between the bearing and carrier, from what I understand.
