    \"Rock Bruiser\" Differential covers.

MOO sells these with an option to have the preload bolts pertruding from the cover. How would you set the preload without seeing the gears? Is the preload adjustable enough that backyard mechanic could adjust it without hurting it too much ?

You set the preload on the carrier bearing caps. This prevents or reduces the distorting of the bearings in high load conditions. The covers actually have two bolts per side. The bolts on the outside do nothing more than keep the gear oil from escaping. If you damage them the preload is not affected. The preload bolt is an allen headed set screw that you snug down against the cap and torque to 15 foot pounds. The preload adjustment is in no way related to setting up a set of gears, it is just another way to prolong the bearing life of your differential.
