We were going up to Tahoe to do some rock climbing. Woke up and the weather was sorta crappy so we said screw it and went to sac to climb in the gym.

We were doing some lead climbing which you have to use your own rope for. I was up near the top of the wall trying to clip the anchor, slipped and fell. Rope started to go tight then pop. ****er broke clean off. I hit the deck from 30 feet. Knocked the wind outa me. Buddy held me still why I was chocking for air. I got the air back in me. I could not move. Paramedics were there in a couple minutes...strap me to the board...blah blah blah...many test and a lotta vikodin later I am sore but ok.

Thank God we didn't go to Tahoe. I can't get the 'what if' outta my head. Anyways, can't sleep so I thought I'd share.-brian

I got a new one a couple weeks ago, but we happened to be using my friends rope at the time. He claims it didn't have many falls on it and that he checked it regularly. It looked good...but uh...yeah. I'm not climbing with him again.

No. I've never seen anybody wearing one in there. The floor has some padding, so it's its not like I hit concrete. They told me afterward that it looked like I landed in the perfect position. The doctor told me it was one in a million to fall from that height and be out of the hospital the same day. I do wear a helmet when climbing outside.

You really need to work on your insults. A four year old could out **** talk you.

Heres a pic i found on the net of the gym. We were around the corner where the wall is a little shorter. Oh...and if anyone was wondering what the inside of a climbing rope looks like...:p:

Pictures would have been nice, but I can always recreate the situation later if need be. Not the fall, just the bleeding.... HMMMMMMM.....

And that's why I bring my own gear or don't climb. Mos of my friends could not tell you exactly how many falls their ropes have had, or they store themoutside in the heat. Good to hear that you are alright.:eek1:

Yeah I agree...but it was someone I trusted and who had a lot of climbing experience. I had my rope with me, his was just already out. Lesson learned I guess.

I never had a problem using friends' gear until I took a small (20') fall. The gear held, but from that point I realized why I had all of the gear to begin with and got paranoid. Nothing like a little fall to wake you up.

    Thanks for the remind!

I got two ropes one 10mm, one 11mm. But, both are in excess of 5 years old and had extensive rapelling on both, so... it's time for replacement.

When it's your ass on the line go with what you know.that is all!
