I have an '87 k5 350 TBI and have had a stumble/stall problem for awhile now, the thing will run fine and then decide to stumble and wont rev, then it would suddenly jump up to idle after slamming the gas pedal a few times and then run fine and then do the whole thing over again, sometimes just stalling out completely. I first thought it was the fuel filter, so I changed it and she ran fine....a few days later did the same thing. So I finally said fu$* it and put a new gas tank, sending unit(needed one anyway), fuel pump, and filter on and she ran fine for about 350 miles and now is doing the same thing again. I cant seem to figure it out...any suggestions??? Could it be my injectors? I still have my stock fully rusted out exhaust.....could that be the prob....maybe clogged cat????? HELP!

Are you getting an engine light?

You always have to check the simplest things first, and it sounds to me like you have a clogged TBI. My dad had a similar problem with his '88 pickup. We cleaned the TBI with Gunk and it ran fine for a while. We then replaced the filter, it ran fine again for a while. Then we replaced the pump and that was the problem. But with you, since you have already done these things, I would say to definitely clean the injector. It may also need replacing if you have high mileage.

I rarely have the engine light come on, but every once in awhile it does. It does come on when the engine dies though. What is the best way to clean the injectors????...should I remove them first or is there another way...I really dont want to have to take the beast into the shop. Do I need anything special to remove the injectors??

Well, to start, just buy a can of injector cleaner at a parts store. Then just follow the instructions (some may have different instructions than others). But all you really need to do is spray it in there like you would a carburetor. Just make sure to get every nook and cranny. Keep in mind, though that that only cleans the surface for the most part. I would also get one of those cleaners that you dump in the gas tank. Believe it or not, and I know some people will disagree with me on this one, running regular unleaded gas as opposed to premium can also make a big difference. It does for my rig. Replacing an injector is pretty easy too, I think. OH! I almost forgot to tell you--be sure to check ALL your fuel lines as thoroughly as possible. You may have some cracked lines.

Get the little code thing and find out what code it stored in the puter. It can tell you a bunch!

try cleaning it out with the spray, then run 1/4 tank of premium gas with a cleaning additive in it, find a long lonesome road and floor it for a bit, if that doesn't do the trick then mech. work is needed. also cleck all the lines for cracks/kinks....
    good luck!
    peace.

My brother-in-law just went through a whole whack of similar trouble. After swapping out this part and that part, it ended up being a blown EGR valve.........

I had kind of the same problem, but mostly stalled coming off idle. Come to find out the brand new EGR was bad (Stuck open) But cant tell if this is whats happening to you. I would also check your fuel and fuel return lines, they could easily get bent during engine/chassis work

His problem was MOSTLY at idle, but sometimes it would feel "boggy" at speed, too. His fuel mileage started getting pretty bad as well.

Can I bring up one other small thing? Where are you getting your gas from? You say that for say 350 miles it runs ok, then it'll start again. this is just another free cheap thing to think about. The station your getting gas from might have a full tank of crap. Just a thought.
But if that aint it, I'd go for the injector cleaner then maybe the egr valve.
The check engine light will come when the engine stalls. If its flashing while running, then you need to figure out the code its giving.

    check the filter again
if you changed and it got better and then started again you could have crud in the lines and be clogging the filter, but definately get teh little code reader and see what the computer tells you, when i first got my 89 i ended replacing almost all of the emissons sensors to get it to run right

    It needs a bigger motor.
    what's in it now?
doen't matter it NEEDS A BIGGER MOTOR
