I am pulling apart a 14-bolt ff that I pulled out of a 82 1-ton van, and was suprised to discover that the axle shafts are rusted (fairly deep pits) in the middle portion of each shaft. Both ends of the shafts are clean and the gears are fairly rust-free. Is this a normal situation, or should I replace the shafts?

They're tough as nails. They won't break, don't worry.
