On my last wheelin' trip I had a scare that all Fullsizers should listen to....

While running Upper Ajax trail near Florence Az, I was attempting a climb right next to a large boulder on the driver's side. The Jeep guys I was with squeezed right thru, but since I'm so much wider, I took a line which kept me high on the driver's side. As I do so often I had my head and most of my upper torso out the window watching the front tire to make sure I was on the correct line. All at once, with my foot planted on the brake (read: no tire movement), the left side of the truck fell probably 3 vertical feet and this huge rock tried to get intimate with my head..! Just an instant before the fall, I (thank God) chose to pull my head inside.... From the pics you can see that it wouldn't have been a good thing if my head would've been between the rock an the roof of my truck!

Many of us with Fullsize trucks stick our heads out to get a better view. I recall seeing Steve Watson doing such a pose in the TTC pictures in FourWheeler. If anything is close that can hurt you - get your head back in and get a good spotter.... Just might save your head!

Marv, glad you're ok! That is an excellent tip, and one that us driver's often fail to live by! I am always telling my passengers to "get their head in" or "get their arms, etc in", but I often am poking my head out to get a better look (especially when I take the doors off in the sumer!) Glad you didn't get hurt! You guys thinking about maybe attending TDS Desert Safari in March?? Would love to see you all out there again at Truckhaven, we should have a goo group going from the So Cal area!

Great advice............had a scary close call years ago when I lived in AZ up at Sycamore Creek with my arm hanging out the window.........same thing. I was using it for leverage to hold myself steady while on a sidehill and slid down into a rock wall. Just scraped it but it was close to a crush job.

Putting your body and head out the window out to peak around is something we all do when we're in a pinch for a sec or two. Think about the things we do without even being aware of it. My friend was telling me when I crawl over scary rocks and what not, I hang my left arm out the window and beat the outside of the door. I never knew it! Hell if I ever rolled I'd smash my arm. Or hanging on to the door supprt beam, stuff like that.

That jeep thing? Yah I understand it....... Like my Blazer? http://community.webshots.com/user/blazerk5

    Keith,

Would really like to go to TDS.... Might make it in the FunBuggy if things go good! But the Blazer was a blast out there last time...! The only conflict I might have is that some buddies are going to Moab sometime in March too....

    Ah,... decisions, decisions...

Marv, just let me know what you decide, we'd love to see you guys come out and meet us again! TDS Safari is a major happening, hell you might even bring along some of your "promotional" materials for the 1500+ participants to look at! [IMG]

Oh, and by the way, it is March 1-3 weekend if that helps!

My first mental reaction when I read the subject line was "DUH"! Then I recalled the tree that almost took my head off doing the same thing - hanging out the window! We've all done it. Watch out for those branches that snap back into your face through an open window! So even though most of us aren't out on the trails very much this time of year (at least in the snow belt), we still need to be aware of this. You might want to repost this when the weather gets warmer and more of us are out there!
