    Say it ain\'t so

I just bought a case of Quaker State oil today and the parts guy behind the counter said that I might as well buy Penzoil. He said that QS and Penzoil had merged about 6 months ago and their oil is the same now. Is he smoking crack or is he right about this? Its the first time I've heard anything of the kind.
AND, if this is right, what kind of oil should I switch to? Because I don't want anything like Penzoil in my engine. What do you guys use?

Penzoil just has kind of a bad rep around here. I've talked to some engine builders and they have said engines they've torn apart that were using Penzoil were kind of gummed up on the inside and some other stuff was weird. And I don't think ANY of my car/truck friends use Penzoil.

    Re: Say it ain\'t so

Actually, Penzoil and QS are the same thing! AHHHH!!!
I don't like to run Penzoil, but my dad always ran penzoil in the Mercedes. It is a diesil and a mercedes diesil at that, but 500K (Yes, 500K...no typo) miles and the motor does not need to be rebuilt. It is on it's last leg, but the compression is still with in specs. I haven't opened the motor up so I don't know what it looks like in there yet.

I like Valvoline. I've seen that oil clean up a motor and make it look new again. Valveoline has been tried and true to me. Of course, any oil is better than not changing the oil regularly.

    Re: Say it ain\'t so

The reason that they are bad is because they are paraffin based ( the same stuff candles are made of ). I guess that after long periods of heat and cooling cycles the paraffin starts to gum up and become sludge. Now ive never seen this firsthand, but I have heard from a few people that have torn apart engines run on Pennzoil and QS that there is a significant amount of sludge in the engine compared to most. It may be a coincidence though that these people werent real good about changing their oil on time or they ran them very hard, but my opinion is stay away from them if for no other reason than the fact that they are wax based and that just doesnt seem good to me.

I was just reading the link that Klier provided on oil filters...and found this little gem.

    Quaker State
    QS8A
This filter has changed from being a Purolator to a Fram Extra Gaurd. This may have been a result of Pennzoil aquiring Quaker State brand name.

    So maybe it is so...

Don't know about the merger but i have been using Mobil 1 synthetic oil for a few months now. after 3000 miles in the camaro i put it in the jimmy, i was still golden color. before that i was using regular mobil oil, pretty cheap at 90 cents a quart.

    Re: Say it ain\'t so

I am a huge fan of mobil. I used to always use their conventional line but have now switched to mobil 1 synthetic. It is great oil. Pennzoil got a bad rep because it used to be a paraffin based oil, which did cause sludge. It has since been reformulated, but it is hard to shake a bad reputation. Pennzoil and QS are owned by the same company now, but I am not sure if they are the same oil. Just my thoughts.

I'm thinkin' that the brand of oil is not as important as changing it on time. Except for synthetics, they are all probably pretty much the same. I'm sure if you dug up enough info, and did enough tests, you'd find something wrong with all of them.

    Re: Say it ain\'t so

When I was In high school I worked in a shop. I tore down several motors. The only engine that stands out in my mind
for being in the worst shape ran Quaker state It had around 75,000 miles on it and there was enough build up in the lifter valley when I scraped it out it filled up a cut off oil bottle (cut off at the neck) The shop only used penzoil and that is all I will
use. I seen the inside of a few with penzoil and it made a world of difference one had if I remember correctly around 165,000 on it and the only reason it was tore down was a head gasket blew but anyway just my .02 cents

Oil is oil. I use wal-mart brand most of the time. If it's API SJ, it's all the same.
