Ok, i took everything off my 77 including the exhaust and motor. I put it all on my 84, the engine, my exhaust is 2-1/4 inch flow master, i guess my question is, is it harder for a 84 to pass then a 77? or is the criteria the same, am i going to need to buy Cats? I heard i lose power if i put cats on..... thx in advance

It's illegal to take an older motor and put it in a newer truck. Here in Texas, '84 and up has to have cats.

Don't hit me, Mr. Moderator... I'll go back on topic... I swear![IMG]

The "new" High-Flo cats are just as good as a piece of straight pipe....I've seen the tests that prove it in the magazines.

I think the hype about cats robbing power is from the earliest days when cats were first installed in cars. Things have come a LONG way since then....I wouldn't sweat adding the cats (except for the $$$ you'll have to spend!) [IMG]

You need to call and see what the requirements are. Typically there are two type of emissions test, a visual and a "sniffer" (where they actually measure the emissions levels), some states/areas do one or the other, or both. For the visual test they will look to see if all of the original emissions equipment (for the '84) is there, including cats.

Legally, you have to meet whatever criteria is newer, be it the vehicle or the motor. Your vehicle is the newer being an '84, so those are the standards that it should be tested at. Is the '77 trashed, if so, make the '84 a '77 with the plate on the dash.

I am not contributiong to the chaos, only pointing out information that is helpful for the topic discussed which is protected under the 1st and 14th amendments of the US constitution...can anyone tell i am trying to do my Media Law & Ethics homework[IMG]

Being that you are in Oregon and I think you are not in an exempt area (Hillsboro, right?) you will need cats. They do a visual check of the cats and fuel filler neck............and do the sniffer test. The Catco cats are about $50 each and flow extremely well.

In Az it doesnt matter what year the motor is as long as it conforms to the emissions standard for the vehicle..... smog pump, cats, stuff like that.

That jeep thing? Yah I understand it....... Like my Blazer? http://community.webshots.com/user/blazerk5

The first time you get pulled over, or inspected, and someone notices the rivets aren't original, or the VIN has been messed with, you will be walking home, if you get to go home at all. It's not worth it. Make your truck run cleanly, and be done with it. I didn't see anything on Oregons DEQ page about visual inspections, just said dyno/idle. Therefore, if no visual, you could make it pass emissions based on numbers alone, which is what the Government SHOULD be looking at, even though that is not usually the case.

Already came up numerous times before, removing the cat. converter for any reason from any vehicle so originally equipped is a federal crime, (of which YOU can be held liable, not just a shop) not state law, so state law alone is not an effective way to judge whether or not you can tamper with your emissions components, and get away with it.

Why insist on counting when the ring gear has the tooth counts stamped in?
