A friend of my Dad's wants me to try and sell his 04 Caterpillar 257B All-Terrain Skid loader. Namely a tracked "bobcat". He is looking to get about $40k for it. Not sure if thats outrageous or what, but anyway, how do you go about this? I mean what should I say when it comes to payment? Require payment within a week? Couple thousand down payment? I am just not sure. Never sold anything bigger than like $100.

do a 10% deposit upon winning the auction, then give the guy 2 weeks to come up with the rest of the money, then let him take it

I agree with this, I sold a truck, and required a 500$ deposit to my paypal acct. within 3 days, and the rest upon recieving the truck, either cashiers check, or cash upon exchange.

I have sold several $20k+ items on ebay and bought a couple also. You need to get a $1000 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit within 2 business days of auction close. Either by PayPal, Western Union, Bank Check, etc. Checks and such can be sent FedEx. The balance should be paid within 5 days of the deposit. Anyone bidding on the item should have funds available.

Pickup is what ever you can stand. Of course, put a disclaimer in the auction that if a bidder needs other terms to e-mail prior to bidding. You can then look at their feedback and make a case by case decision. Also, the item does not leave your possesion until all funds have cleared your bank.
