OK- is it possible to set backlash without a dial indicator and just with marking compound? I don't need it 100% perfect, just close enough to last for 5-7000miles.

No, marking compound just shows your pinion depth.

Well, the backlash and the marking compound are two totally seperate things...

Backlash would be the "play" or "slop" between the pinion gear and the ring gear. Which is adjusted by moving the ring gear/carrier in and out in relation to the pinion. What you use the marking compnd for is checking the pinion depth..also called "Checking The Pattern". So, I would say no, You should get a hold of a dial indicator to do it right. Not just the marking compund.
