shaving diffs

    10 bolt front, 12 bolt rear.
    how much can i take off? is this something i can do in the driveway? what tools would work best?

    I know the 14 bolt has a large lip that can be safely taken off. I'd pull the cover on the 12 bolt and see how thick the housing is on the bottom. If there is a lip I'm sure it could be removed.

    Personally I'd use a grinder with a cut-off wheel, then use a regular disc to clean it up and shape it.

    you're pretty safe just removing the lips so they'll slide easily. Having them smooth on the bottom makes a pretty big difference in getting over stuff. I know I drove/drug over stuff in the Mini Rubicon that other guys with un-shaved 14 bolts hung up on, that made me happy. Nothing like seeing a direct result of your work. (or of Dad's work in this case, he air-arc'd the bottom off)
