Should I replace the u-joints at my front axle/wheel?

    My Jimmy has not had the best maintenance record in the past, but it also hasn't been run too hard. But for some components, I don't want to wait for them to break before replacing them. For example, the other day I replaced the u-joints on the front and rear axles. The u-joints on it were the original factory joints. May not sound like a big deal to you, but my Jimmy has 239,000 miles on it! Not too damn bad!

    Anyway, in a couple of weeks, I am replacing the front and rear gears. I believe that we will have to pull the fron axle shafts out slightly to do this. If this is true, while I am pulling out the front axle shafts, should I go ahead and replace the u-joints up there as preventative maintenance? U-joints are fairly cheap and I believe in doing things right when I'm in there.

    Y'all's thoughts?

    I think you answered your own question. Yes you will have to pull the shafts out to change gears and yes u-joints are cheap insurance (I would recommend spicers). So I guess I would have to say yes...do it while you have everything apart.

    If you didn't build it yourself, how can you call it yours.......?

    Yes. They're $9 a piece. Why wouldn't you replace them?

    If you plan on doing any rock crawling, I think they'd break pretty fast being 15+ years old and not having any grease in them.

    When I got my 10 bolt front from the '82 K20, I pulled the shafts out and took the axle in to a shop and had the balljoints replaced (cost me $45 for labor). I also replaced the axle u-joints. Be advised--they're rusty and are going to take a lot of beating to get out.

    I used a 5 ton press. I put pressure on them with the press and tapped them with a hammer. They basically exploded. The cap came out of the axle with such force that it flew to the floor and rusty needle bearings went everywhere. The truck had been sitting for two years so that made it pretty bad.
