I have an opportunity to purchase a 454 for $600. The engine is coming from a former drag racer that had pulled the engine after a couple passes on the strip. It has a standard steel crank that has never been turned and is great shape. The heads have been ported and polished and have a 3 angle valve job. The cam is a competition cams 292 with 526 lift and is also in good shape. Overall is the engine is good shape. The cylinders are in great shape with no ridge at the top. The only problem there is on 7 rods with pistons. he used the piston and rod in another 454. No intake or carbureter.

I know that 454's cost quite a bit more if you can find a good one which this one is in great shape. Can I justify buying the 454 to replace a tired running 6.2 diesel. Should I purchase this engine to replace my 6.2? I know this a silly question but I had to ask because I have never had any dealings with big blocks, only small blocks.

    Lets see:

    454 5 mpg
6.2 20+ mpg depending on ratio and driving habits

    454 gas expensive
    6.2 Diesel cheap

454 more mods to make so it can be a gasser (torque converter, fuel lines, tank, electrical connections....etc...)
    6.2 Plug N play

    454 everyone has one
    6.2 rare breed of engine

454 Pulling a trailer reqires you fill up at every station...oh wait..you have to even if you aren't pulling a trailer
    6.2 Fill up...um...sometime?

A former drag engine you might be lucky to get 5 mpg, unless somthing is wrong with your 6.2 then you should keep the 6.2.

I wouldn't really trust a former drag engine, a coupl eof passes can seriously damage an engine that is why they pull them out after a coupl eof races.
And as Tybee said, 5MPG is unrealistic with such an engine, a regular big block gets 5MPG.

Thanks guys. I'm going to pass on the 454. I'll run the 6.2 tills it falls in to the grave. I just replaced all my fuel injectors with ones from Diesel Injection Service. It seems to be running better than it was. I gave $20.26 per injector plus mine as cores. I didn't think that was a bad deal but a whole lot cheaper than anyone in my are in Tennessee plus I got them in 2 days.

Add to other problems, I have a guy that wants to trade me a '91 chevy SWB for my '83 blazer. Someting else to ponder!!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

    Thanks again.

Actually I would have bought the 454 for $600, found someone to buy it for more and the profit could finance your engine's rebuild. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

First thing you are posting in the diesel forum, which is going to be very biased for the diesel( no offense to you diesel K5's but, yep, and thats fine with me.) I would get the 454 if you want some horsepower..wait guys.. If you want some higher rpm, faster horsepower. That 454 is probably pushing 500+ with the right intake and carb, much more than your 6.2. It would be more fun to drive because it would be fast as hell with the 454, sound awesome, and get the oohhs and ahhhs. It will be terrible on fuel economy. As far as towing the 454 will outpull that 6.2 anyday. Transmission and other drivetrain issues will have to be delt with. I would definantly go with the 454 if you can afford it otherwise I would build a hopped up 6.2, one that will blow some black smoke. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
