Should I run backing plates or not?

When I got my d60, I set it down on the garage floor and immediately bent the piss outta the backing plates. When I dissassembled the axle, I just pulled them off and tossed them because they were in bad shape even before I crunched 'em. Should I get new ones and put them on or just run without 'em? The rotor is definitely more vulnerable without them but mud and rocks and junk wouldn't get trapped either.

Just wondering what everybody's opinion is.
