I'm going looking for a 465/pedal set-up tomorrow and need to know what the I.D marks are. I know that it is really short but are there any other trans that can be mistaken. I need one for a np208 so if I find a two wheel drive trans, what years should I look for(besides the splin count) if I can grab an adapter? And last what year did GM start using the hydro clutch?

This is a good page for SM465 info:
    http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/sm465.htm

First off, you better have a TH400 in there now. The TH400 and SM465 use a 32-spline output shaft, and thus, have a 32-spline NP208 mated to them. A TH700 has a 27-spline output instead. If you have a TH700, you will need to swap the input gear on the NP208, or just get an complete tranny/t-case.

The SM465 you need has a long (10" or so) output shaft with 32-splines. You also need the SM465/NP208 adapter. This narrows your search down to an 81-87 1/2 or 3/4-ton pickup - or a 81-91 Blazer/Jimmy/Suburban.

The hydraulic clutch started in '85. It uses a different bellhousing from the mechanical linkage variant.

    better yet,
get a matching tranny transfer case combo that is all bolted together rather then buying them seperate.

    Update
I just got a deal on a 82 for less than cheap. I could pull the trans, clutch pedals, and linkages and part out the rest and get my money back. Could I just change the output shaft to a long 32 spline and find the correct 208 or 241 with the adapter? If I do this will the drive shafts be the same length?
