I have a 1980 gmc with a 4-speed SM465 and a NP205. I would like to put in an overdrive transmission. Does anyone have any info on swapping a NV4500? I also heard about a 4-speed overdrive used in the mid 80's. Does anyone have tranny or swap info for this transmission?

The only one I know of is the 700r4 od transmission. Ive got one it came out of a 86 Blazer with about 50,000 miles on it. It was mated to a np208 t-case. To put a 205 behind it you have to buy an adapter.

I think there was a Saginaw 4 speed OD trans. used on some trucks, but 2WD only.

    I put an NV4500 into my '87 K5. I did it in Mom's driveway.

    Steve,
Was it worth it? Did gas mileage improve?

It was worth it. I don't need a tow truck anymore (got rid of the 700R4). I run 4:88s so OD is required. My MPG is about 13 average, same as with the old automatic.

I run the NV4500 with a dubler and userd the stock chevy bell housing. I had the advance install kit befor and when I changed to the dubler I had to change out the output shafted I dumped the advance kit and went to the chevy parts. As it being worth it or not my milage on the highway went from 14 to 24 mpg. I replaced a 465 4 speed.
