Ive never had a 465, but other manuals I ve driven have done this. Its normal to an extent, but if its really bad try replacing the mount.

You're talking just the shifter handle itself? Like when its in gear, (not running) you can still move it around a bunch?

All the ones I've driven (SM465) are like this, but I noticed on both shifter handles I've had out, the factory weld is broken. (also has a roll pin, wonder if GM put it there because they knew the weld would break..but would be "tight" until you got off the lot)

Not sure if welding the piece back together would fix it, but my guess would be that you would solve at least 50% of the "slop" the factory shifter has. Take your shifter off and take a look at the tranny end of it. 10 to 1, the welds busted.

Why insist on counting when the ring gear has the tooth counts stamped in?

Mine has the same slop. It never pops out or creates any issues so I just thought it was how it is....??

Nothing to worry about. 465's were put into trucks back in the days that a truck was a truck. Once the soccer moms got interested in driving trucks, they had to be more civilized. [IMG]

Yep, mine does the same thing. The shifter handle is so "loose" there is no way it is going to take the tranny out of gear lol. I really want to try welding it up though, and seeing how that works out.
