Mine pops out of 3rd gear. All others are fine, but it just won't stay in third. Any ideas or fixes?

I hear it could be the "sliders" not sure what these are...
Or the springs for the stick itself.

Apparently these springs are REALLY hard to get. My friend spent a month trying to get some. He found, except I don't know where off-hand.

Can anyone else confirm or deny this?

Most likely it is the pocket bearing is a little worn. Common proublem for the sm465.

I think that is from the strange nylon that chev put on the shift forks wearing off and not allowing you to get full engagment of 3rd gear. just a theory

Is the remedy a complete overhaul?

if you pull the tranny, and then remove the top cover, you can see everything shifting related.
if the syncros are worn then, yes a rebuild is an idea.
if the bearings are worn you have to rebuild it.
there is a trick to the cover removal that you have to know.
it HAS to be half into reverse to pull or install top cover.

if you are thinking of pulling it you have to read KRAZIE87K5's great saga.
he pulled an auto, then he swapped mainshafts in his 465, and then coverted a 73? to hydraulic clutch.

<a target="_blank" href=http://community.webshots.com/user/dan_dycus>photo'd tons of it for us</a> good shots of 465 guts.

if you cant learn from his threads you are dead,
