What is the correct way to remove the top shifter portion of the transmission. Is there a certain gear it should be in?

if you mean the top cover, it needs to be half way into reverse. the easyest way is to remove the shifter( push the down the part where the shifter goes in and turn it) and move the slider all the way to the left forward just a little.

I had little problem with it until i figured it out.

Shift it halfway into reverse...lift top section off. To put it back together you have to position the reverse fork carefully and make sure it engages as the cover drops on.

Well if you're taking the top cover off the SM465 the shifter makes a nice handle and you can put the whole works somewhere else...shifter still attached. Or are you being a smart-ass?/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah I realized that from your first post. Shift it halfway into reverse, unbolt and remove./forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif
