    The firing order is :

    1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

I usually put the #1 wire on the 5 o'clock position on the distributor cap.

Put the #1 wire on the 5 o'clock tab on the distributor cap. Now follow the firing order above and go clockwise around the cap with the next wire and so on......

    Does that make sense?

Your cylinder order is Driver side bank 1-3-5-7, passenger bank is 2-4-6-8. 1&2 are the closest to the radiator. At least this is the order if I remember right cylinder wise. Then I think that you just put the wires from the firing order above on clockwise from the 5 o'clock position.

Assuming that piston #1 is at TDC.

Your diagram is right, and the order of the cylinders you have listed is right. If you have it wired the way you have it shown then that is not the problem.

I'ts been a while but if it still has points ignition isn't #1 one off from Hei? If so you will need to advance(?) the wires one space. I might be wrong but I think I remember something like that. If that's not it...Then take the #1 plug out and ball up a small piece of paper towel and push in into the plug hole(not too far). Then bump the ignition over slowly until the ball shoots out. This will be #1 TDC. Remove the cap and see where the rotor is pointing. This should be #1. Match that with the cap and install your wires from there.Hope this helps-Russell

You have the right idea, just probably have a wire crossed with another. Double check everything, we've all screwed up this way before. A burned wire will make a miss too.

CHECK THE WIRES ON AN OHM METER.
