Does anyone know if smallblock heads are similar enough that they could be swapped or substituted? (e.g. passenger side head put on the driver's side of the block).

I'd guess that accessory mounting points might not be there but the head bolt pattern and intake/exchaust valve ordering looks symmetric.

If they are the same, are there any drawbacks to substituting one for the other?

    Thanks in advance.

You might have to swap out a coolant passage block off plug and a heat sensor, but other than that they are exactly the same. Even the accessory mounting holes are the same.

Thanks. There goes that theory - I wonder why my heads only have 2 accessory mouting points on the front instead of 3? All the aftermarket smallblock pwr steering pump brackets for use with headers I've looked at have 3 holes. Mine appears to be missing the one up by the valve cover near the intake manifold. Guess I should look at the casting number.

Sounds like you've got a really old head there. Somewhere way back in the history of the small block, they didn't have a requirement for the 3rd hole.

I interchanged mine last week when I was completing my top end rebuild.
