Saw some differing opinions regarding when a vehicle becomes smog exempt. Turns out 74's are now exempt as well.

The second section down on thisDMV SMOG FAQ site explains it all.

We hoo, next January my 75 volvo is exempt too.

74's were exempt as of Jan 1st of this year. I have spoken to several DMV supervisors about it cause I wanted to be absolutely sure.

Finally my 74 can be "modified" engine wise /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's pretty cool that they're moving the cutoff, it was up in the air as to whether or not they'd leave it at 73. Unfortunately, now my 73K5 isn't as unique. I was just getting ready to sell it too (right......).

Actaully, you only have to wait until Jan of 2005 until your is exempt. Check out the DMV link in the first post. They take current year and subtract 29 to find exempt vehicles (eg. 2003 - 29 = 74 exempt)

Its a fact /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I took my 74 in last week to smog it and my smog guy told me, "get it out of my bay, I got the paperwork the other day you dont need to be smogged any more! What??? Yea your exemt! (looking at him in total dis-belief) Naa, Yea go to DMV!" Well I did and she said it is true. Well, I have tags so its true. Very cool!
