There were times when I lived in Soda Springs that I'd have all 4 wheels chained up to get around.

Hey if you go to Les Schwab and buy chains from them and if you don't use them come April you can return them & get you money back. I bought a pair about 4 years ago and haven't used them yet, but I planned on keeping them.
Right know I don't know what the weather is going too be like but I am only getting up dates to Saturday nothing further than that. Since I work for CalTrans up at Kingvale I am on the pulse of what the weather is doing.
Good luck.
Also on your way up or down you should stop by, I am right off the Interstate.

When I pull up to the chain control guys, they rarely ask me. They usually put up a 4 with their hands and let me drive by as I nod "yes".

One time I got stopped at a check point and they asked if I had chains. When I said "no", they chain control guy said, "Are you sure you wanna say no? If you do, I have to turn you around to go buy them."
So I said, "Okay, I have chains." Then he said, "I'm sure you'll be fine, they just want you to have them on you."
So now, every time I go up there and they ask, I say "yep" and they let me blast right by.

I got mine for 35" from 4wheelparts for 65 last year
I have yet to put them on but I have them with me when I go in the snow belt.
I think I remember the 38" were just a hair under 100.

As far as my knowledge goes about california law, you are required to carry chains but if you have a 4X4 with mud and snow tires they cannot make you put them on, they can only make you put it in 4wheel drive. If you have a 4X4 and also need chains then the road is closed anyhow so it really doesn't matter.
