This is an e-mail I got today. I have work on this Saturday, but I am going to see if they will be there on Sunday removing the finces. Some of you asked me ,"What can I do?", well this is it. Ity may not be as much fun as wheeling, but it shows we care.

    Don't I feel stupid!!!!

    Mike,

Thank you for contacting AFFA - Americans For Forest Access.

Yes, it is true that major trail restrictions are in the works - unless
we all fight to stop it. One example is the Willow Fire closure area.
The BLM and Forest Service have seized it as an opportunity to illegally
close roads, ohv trails, mtn bike routes and 4x4 trails. Another
example is the current Southern California Forest Planning Process.
    http://www.forestaccess.org/fs-plan.php

We had a booth at the NORBA mtn bike races last weekend and got
a great response to our information. We are working hard to keep
our current trails open and re-open some of the trails closed recently.

We meet the second Tuesday of each month. The meeting locations are
announced the week before each meeting. We usually meet in a meeting
rooms at a lodge in Big Bear City. We will send you an email notice of the
meeting location if you are interested.

The group was formed in Big Bear. However, we are rapidly expanding and currently
address the four southern California forests. The 4 forests are jointly developing their
new forest plans so, we found we needed to deal with all four so. cal. forests at this time.

Frankly, no one really wants to do this, but we realize that the extent of the closures
which will result if their new plans go unopposed will effectively lock us out of the forests.

The forest service is also actively working to limit the use of horses in the forests as well.
In the Sierra, they have instituted a 36 hour quarantine and limit pack sizes to under 8.
The only activity currently not directly under attack is hiking. However, two hiking trails
in the new Peninsular Big Horn Sheep Wilderness are now off limits to humans.

In addition to fighting the closures, we have three active projects.
    Fence Removal Project
    Mountain Bike Trail Restoration Project
    Hiking Trail Restoration Project
The fence removal project will commence on June 9th. See our web site for details.
We welcome all the assistance we can get. The other two projects have been
approved by the FS but the details have not been finalized.

We hope to meet you at the fence removal project or at one the AFFA meetings.

Thank you for expressing an interest in AFFA.

    Regards,

    Dale Davis
