And I have one of those "learn to play for beginners" software things. No luck.

It is an acoustical guitar. I have a tuner also and it is in tune. Where do I go (besides lessons) to start to learn to play?

Here's what I would do if I was back in your shoes...

Look up some guitar tab on the net. The chords are a bit easier to learn at first imo. (Just Google "I Am The Walrus Tab" or "Paint It Black Chords" for a specific song) I'd stick to songs with simple major and minor chords first. You can pick up the 7ths and 9ths, etc later. Also, if you want to play rock and roll, get the fingering down for the F and B chords. Those are the basic bar chords that can be played at any position.

It really boils down to; What are you into? Nirvana? About a girl is basically E minor and G. Black Sabbath, a lot of basic bar chords.

Once you get a few chords down, you can start picking out some single note riffs. The intro to Tuesday's Gone is a fairly simple one.

I don't teach music, so I don't know if any of this makes sense to anyone besides myself, but I hope I've at least pointed you in the general direction. That's basically what I've done to learn. I really wouldn't concider myslef a really good guitar player. I do enjoy playing, but I've never taken lessons. I was good enough to get laid on my guitar skill alone though.

The Tabs on the net look helpful. My fingertips are sore from playing it, and its a little frustrating, but I am getting more comfortable with it.

Thanks. Those actually look very useful.

Of course the first thing I noticed was that they are advertising 2 things - ADHD drugs and the Air Force. Is that a hint.:D

Call your local music store and ask if they give lessons. Then go take a few, just to make sure you get the basics right, and use tabs to go from there. It's what I did.

My wife actually got me a gift certificate for lessons for Christmas, so I will be doing that too.

Sweet. Apparently I can't read, because I missed the "besides lessons" part the first time around.
