Yep, stabbed the throttle and it stuck to the floor. Engine revved up, I dropped it into nuetral, revved way up, I shut it down. Popped the hood to find my tranny kickdown cable came off the throttle arm on the carb and jammed the throttle cable. I fixed the two cables, fired it back up and off I went.

Now it hits on 6 or 7 cylinders. All cylinders are sparking so what the [darn] did I do to it?

Maybe the truck now hates you...and it's playing sick until you sell it to someone else? Either that or you busted something and it's time for an Izuzu or Kia...

Compression test? you could have little pieces of ring in your oil pan. Good indication is if your oil smells like gas. Could also pull valve cover to watch rockersand make sure you didn't flat spot the cam.

Probably does hate me, I hate it too. Now if someone would just give me about $800 for it.

Well, the oil definetly smells of gas, but it doesn't matter anymore. I started it up and heard the worst metal clanking sound I have ever heard in an engine. It ran for about 3 seconds then died. I did even want to start it up after that.

I won't throw it out. It will probably just sit in the backyard in the K5 until I decide to mess with it again.

Would a aftermarket rev limiter (like a MSD) have helped in this situation? I thought there was a factory rev limiter.

No factory rev limiter. It'll just keep going and going, ask me how I know.

Now the MSD box on the other hand, that thing works great for throttle junkies like me. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Yes and no,,,,A rev limiter will protect the engine from running away but even if you "free rev" an engine things can still break. The internal stresses placed on a "loaded"
engine at a given RPM are entirely different than on an unloaded engine.
    I run a rev limiter for 2 reasons,first I
don't have to watch the tach when I'm flooring it thru mud holes,I set my shift light 200 rpm below the limiter and notch it up thru the gears when I see the light.
    Second
reason is if I break some driveline part the engine won't free rev till I reach the kill switch.Iv'e seen lots of people tear up good engines just because they sound good at high rpm's. If they ever looked at a curve chart they would see that most engines loose horsepower and torque after a certain RPM.
Setting your rev limiter and keeping the engine within the power band is the correct thing to do. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Another vote for bent pushrods. Pull the valve covers and have a look. Once they bend they can jump off of the rocker arms. /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif If you find that, then also look closely at the top of the corresponding lifter to see if the retaining ring popped out, along with the top cap of the lifter. If the lifters look OK then put some good pushrods in it and see how it runs. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

It might be quicker to just pull the valve covers and check the rockers. Maybe you got lucky and just broke one.
