soft brake pedal

    My brake pedal is really soft. I put new drums and new shoes on it yesterday and the this morning. I thought that would help but it didn't. what could it be? Master cylinder or what?

    Did you bleed them? It may be old brake fluid that's giving you hell too

    Very well could be the master cylinder. Mine was spongy after bleeding the brakes extensively (changed the fluid) and the master cylinder basically failed...I would be sitting at a light, and the pedal would slowly drop to the floor. Right after changing the fluid, the brakes never were "firm" like they should have been.

    Try changing your fluid if it isn't new. (can't hurt) If it's new, bleed them real good again. At worst, you have to replace the master cylinder, the good news there is, if you bled the brakes correctly, you don't have to bleed again if you replace the master cylinder!

    Have you checked out your brake lines? Might have one leaking a little.

    thanks. I'll bleed them as soon a I get some more break fluid. I don't think I have a leak as my master cylinder is full.

    Check for leaks... make sure the prop valve is operating correctly and the rear brakes are adjusted properly... next bleed out all the old fluid and make sure you have no air caught up anywhere in the system... if you still have a problem you can try bleeding the master out (although usually this will result in you continuly getting air in the the lines while bleeding) or check if you can get the master to pump up and hold w/ the vehicle off... if it doesn't you could have the master leaking internally which would give no air.

    I bled my rear brakes and it helped alot. But still not perfect. I'll bleed my front brakes as soon as I get some new hoses. Any advice on adjusting rear brakes? My manual doesn't seem to cover that. Thanks for the help.

    Don't use syntehetic brake fluid - not as solid of a 'pedal.'

    Power bleeding from a shop is the best but if you do it yourself you can get it done with a quart or 2.

    Rear brakes are *supposed* to be self adjusting. Drive backwards, keep applying the brkes, they are supposed to tighten up. Barring that, take the tire/drum off, and tighten (expand) the brakes using the star adjuster near the bottom. Do that until you can't get the drum back on. Loosen it until the drum JUST goes on. That should be close enough.

    On my FF14, I jack up one of the wheels, and turn the adjuster through the slot on the back of the plate and spin the tire....continue until the pads just barely drag on the drum. No removal of the drum necessary.
