Solid axle NP241 and IFS NP241-what\'s the difference?

Okay, I definately want to put a solid axle up front instead of the no articulation IFS I have. Thing is, I want to change my transfer case and put in a GM front axle. I can get all the 10 bolts and GM D44's I want, but try finding a Ford solid front D44 and I'm in for a couple of months of fun, and forget about a Ford D60.

I like my NP241, plenty strong and has nice, low gearing for a nice slow crawl in 1st gear at 4lo. My Blazer has a 4L60 (renamed TH700R4), and I doubt there is any difference between the one in it, and the one in a 89-91 Blazer or Suburban. So if I was to lay my hands on a NP241 from a 89-91 Blazer, would it bolt right up?

The front axle mountings and all that are going to be handled, I'm just starting a shopping list.

If you decide to keep the case you have now you can also use an axle from a full size Jeep, like a Wagoneer or J10. Dana 44 with the pinion on the same side as your IFS NV241. It is easer to adapt because it doesn't have all the odd cast in parts for the radius arms. There are four of them in the junkyard by my house. They seem to be easier to find than the Ford solid axles. Maybe because there is less of a demand.

I want to keep it all GM personally, but I am building it with the intentions of possibly one day taking it to New Zealand. Chevy and GMC trucks are semi-common down there and you can also get parts for them semi-easily without having to pay to much money. Everyone else's trucks actually aren't all that common down there. Actually, there are some Fords, and not very many of the Dodges or Jeeps. Would suck if I busted something and needed a part, but the only parts I could find were back in America.

Yes, the transfer cases are the same except for the output on the IFS being on the drivers side, and opposite for the solid axle model. Just be sure that if you have a 700R4 tranny that you get a 27 spline input versioned 241, as the 400 tranny 241 version's input has 32 splines. The bolt patterns, however, are the same. Good luck.

You might run into a difference in the speedo parts, electronic vs. mechanical. I would think that the tailhousing and associated parts would swap from one case to the other though.
