Well yes 5 quarts is what a standard Chevy V8 takes. About 4 if you don't change the oil filter. I wouldn't recommend mixing oils. I haven't heard anything bad about it I just really wouldn't mix multiple types and brands of oil something wierd about it in my head. Why would you need to mix different kinds if your doing a full oil change?

5 quarts is about right with a filter change too. You can put whatever oil you like in it, but try and stay with the same oil on the changes afterward also.

i would think it would be obvious, the filter alone holds about a quart of oil(a larger one).

Yeah you can change brands and weights when you change the oil. Just watch out for the weight. In Ny durring the winter you may want to run a 5w-30 so it will run a little better in the cold. in the summer you may want to run a 10w-40. Many GM engines recomend a 10w30 or a 5w30 year round because they run a AUX oil cooler. If your truck has a factory oil cooler then stick with the recomended weight.

not to get off topic, but is the cooler on the back of my radiator a tranny cooler or an oil cooler?

I don't know about you guys, but mine takes 5 1/2 to 6 when I change mine, and it's stock. Buy 6 quarts to be safe and go with a synthetic blend if you want, normal oil works just as well. Fill up your oil filter with oil before you put it back on, it will help lessen damage to the engine while the thing builds up pressure after the oil change.

A good way to tell would be to check if the lines come from the tranny or the engine.

If it's driver side it's engine and passengerside is tranny.
I thought the AUX tranny was a given on 3/4 ton burbs....I have a aux electic fan after all....Nope...no Aux tranny cooler on a 454 burb. Has the oil cooler. My POS 95 Vandura with 700 R4 had both but my 8600 GVWR sub doesn't. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif It will have one by the end of next weekend.

same here, 5.5-6 quarts for me too. I have a GM gr 350 crate motor.

AFA mixing oils, I dont think its a big deal. I mean, when you drain oil there will always be residue of that oil on parts etc when u add the new stuff... so unless you have the system flushed or something, you're always "mixing" oils to some degree. Switching brands isnt that big a deal either. Thats just my opinion.

Fram filters are Junk. You know that start up rattle you have.....Fram Sorry anti dranbac valves that don't seal. Use A/C or Bosch. A/C and Bosch are the same filters with different lables. Yeah I can prove it at least on the size that fits our trucks.

PH5, I dont believe has a drain back valve, my dads 88 pickup uses a different filter and it does have the drain back. I have used fram for well over 50K miles, and dad always uses ac filters in his 88 & 97's (maybe because of the drain back valve /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif).

I have a new PH5 filter in hand and I'm shaking the he!! out of it and its not rattling?
