I apologize for being so naive, but it's my first Jimmy and I'm experimenting. On my way home tonight I figured I'd pull over and try low gear on my standard transmission (L,1,2,3,R) with the hubs locked and the transfer case in 4L...I could barely get 10km/h and the truck was jerking at every throttle input. Is this the SM465 that came with the 89's? I've driven tow trucks that couldn't hold a candle to this type of gearing, and am wondering if because it was a originally a government truck, if it may have had something different. It felt like I could pull my house of its foundation. Is this the 6.55 first gear from the spec sheet on this site? This truck is AWESOME and I haven't even started on mods.......... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

    6.55 x 2 or 2.61 or 2.72 is pretty low. That's how it is.

Wow, you got it up to 10 mph ??? My first K5 was a 72 with a 454, sm465/NP-205, and 4:88 gears in 1-ton axles. Talk about a stump puller.

Hey at least you put the transfer case in LO!!!!

There are MANY people who buy new trucks that don't even know what a transfer case is FOR .....

Not many around this website though....

Yes, that LOW gear is from the 465 on those things. Definitely stump pullers. I have the auto, so my first gear is 3.06, but the torque converter can multiply it by 2. I pulled a 15 foot storage shed 50 feet across my friend's backyard so they could replace the sewer line. Pretty cool...
