    Ok speedometer died!
    Speedometer needle would jump around, then got worse and quit.
    Now I hear a grinding noise where the cruise transducer is.
    Its a 82 k5 4x4 diesel blazer!! Ive replaced the lower cable, still looking for the upper(parts people dont have)
    What could it be?? Why wont it work?? /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

    It might be the gear that hooks into the TC. Check it out

    TC = transfer case
    Im not really sure where it is(ive never done it) But look for a cable going into the passenger side of ur TC. The cable goes into a plate thats bolted onto the case. take the bolt out and it should b in there. Is it is busted u should be able to get a new gear from a dealership or a junkyard.

    theres a lil c shaped clamp holding in the assembly, it has one 10mm bolt take it out and the clamp off. Then grab whats sticking out, and pull, it will take some effort they are in there real good after 20+ years. What will come out will be a shaft with a big gear on it if that gear looks ok get a flash light and look in the hole and inspect the small gear on the shaft inside the transfer case. If the big gear is screwed up they are about 8-10$ from any trans shop. I have yet to see a lil gear go but anything is possible. hope this helps.
    good luck

    Try disconnectin the speedo cable underneath and spin it by hand. If it feels rough to spin I'm thinkin it might be that little cruise control box. Also, just for grins disconnect the cable that heads towards the speedo itself and spin that while peering at the speedo to see if the needle moves. Maybe your speedo has bit the dust. I'd do that before I started diggin around in the t-case itself. Good luck to ya.

    It could very easily be a bad transducer. The transducer is famous for giving trouble. Is the cable into the speedo still good? If only the lower cable is twisted and or broken I would highly suspect the transducer as the culprit.
