I have a TPI 350 out of a 1987 Firebird that I am swapping into my 86 Chevy truck. I have had the motor for a couple of months now and have a little bit of money to get ready for the swap. I am been in contact with a "TPI Expert" over the internet and has offered to do the needed work. This what he is suggesting: Rewiring the harness - including replacing the wire loom, firewall connector... yadayadayada... and also converting it to run speed density instead of MAF for $161 including P&L. Then, he said I need a chip with VATS disabled - a stock chip reprogrammed by him $100. Then he said I need a knock sensor for a 92-up car $40. He will also wire a "speed sensor" and erase the EGR from the memcal for $20. Then I need a speed sensor for $57. So, finally... Do these prices seem good, and am I forgetting anything? What, if anything, will I have to do in addition to this to get the TPI running? I know its alot , but please let me know. And once again, thanks in advance for your help!!

sounds pretty good, what price is he installing it for? Do you have a fuel pump with the enough pressure for the motor? make sure you research all necessary parts maybe even call a dealership asking them about the swap and parts needed. i was going to put one in my blazer but i didn't want to spend the money for all the extras i needed. what is your trans? let me know how it turns out good luck.

I will be using a TH350... I am planning on installing it myself. Fuel pump is one thing I dont have. I will probably get a in-line pump, once I find out how much pressure is needed for the motor. I was hoping someone on here would know all the little extras I need. I can handle everything except the TPI related stuff. The mechanics are easy for me such as radiator hoses, throttle linkage and such. I just am not comfortable or knowledgable with complex electrical circuitry. If anyone else has anymore questions or can lend some advice, that'd be great!! TIA!

Great move.......you can see my (almost) completed pictures of the TPI upgrade/motor rebuild I just complete on my website - just CLICK below. Mine is on a 406 SB with LT-1 heads. That brings up a question - what heads are you using? They have to be able to take the TPI manifold.......check bolt pattern and port line up.

I also upgraded from MAF to Speed Density, added 24 lb injectors, new custom burnt chip to match the hot new cam, etc. Polished the runners, added serpentine belt, electric fan. Are you taking the serpentine setup off the TA? Mine is still using the EGR, my builder feels it should be used and helps the motor. Used a Painless Wiring harness, good stuff. Mine will retain the capability to use a 700R4 in the (hopefully near) future.

Sounds like your price is good from the guy. Also sounds pretty complete.

By the way, what is VATS?

Hope this helps just a little. I am no TPI expert but my builder is and tho I have helped out on a lot of the work and installation, I don't understand ALL the details.

Good luck, and please let me know your progress. You can e-mail me, check my profile.

VATS is the Vehicle Anti-Theft System. Has to do with the wiring in the car, therefore, when you put it in a truck, your motor wont start unless that is disabled. Oh, and I got the COMPLETE engine out of the Firebird... so, Im not swapping the manifold onto a older block. Thanks for the input. Your motor looks BAD ASS! Im not doing much to mine, cause I am just going to sell the truck when Im done... I think the TPI will help it sell better.

Thanks for the info.........I assume my builder disabled the VATS ('cause it started!). Good luck, I definitely think it will bring more value with the TPI, heck, you might like it so much you may end up keeping it!!!

No, man... I dont want it. I have a built 454 running 500hp sitting in the garage just itching for the install into my Blazer. Even though TPI is REALLY nice, I still REALLY like that good old Holley 850 DOUBLE PUMPER when she kicks into the 4 barrell... Ahhhhh... Gotta love it.

As far as the VATS thing goes, if you can get access to the keys to the Firebird the motor/computer came from, a simple 5 cent resistor can bypass it. Just measure the impeadance accross the "chip" in the key and mimick it by wiring the resistor in the VATS loop right off of the ECM.
