    Re: Starter Replacement

there are usually wires yes, 1 is from the battery, and the other is from the ignition. There is also 2 mounting bolts in the starter that mount the starter to the block.

    Re: Starter Replacement

Go to your local parts store. If they don't have a starter for a chevy 350, find a new parts store and never return to that one, it sucks. You'll probably be offered the choice between a new and a remanufactured starter. Go with the remanufactured. Depending on brand/where you buy it, expect to pay maybe $85 (including a $10-15 core charge - bring your old broken one back in, they'll give you the core charge back) Total out of pocket, maybe $70 bucks give or take a few.
Replacement: disconnect battery, unbolt the wires that connect to the starter, take out the two mounting bolts that hold the starter on (be careful, starter will be free to fall now), pull starter back out of bellhousing, check mounting surface and starter for any shims (LEAVE THEM THERE if there are any), bolt in new starter, hook up cables to proper terminals, connect battery, and finally get to START truck!

sounds about right to me, that is usually with a core return, you take them your old starter and get a new one.

Re: Starter Replacement and where to get them for the best price

Something to keep in mind... If you have a Advanced Auto around...they sell them with a lifetime guarantee. Just wash the mud off the housing when you have to replace. I go thru about 4 starters a year in the mud, and they have never given me any grief. I pulled out my receipt to check, and it only cost $58.00. Just a thought. Other part stores in your area might have the same thing...Good luck. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif

make sure you disconnect the negative battery cable before you start, otherwise you'll prob get lots of welding done down there /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Its a little pricier, but you also might want to look at the Powermaster XS Volt starter. I recently got one for my rig and I love it. I run headers, so my old factory one would lock up from time-to-time due to heat soak. Sucks when you stop on the trail while people are working through a tough spot and then can't start back up again.

In addition, the factory starter weighs about 18 pounds; the XS Volt unit weighs about 8. It is all aluminum and guaranteed against heat-soak. The XS Volt is also about 40% smaller which makes it much easier to deal with. It uses 4:1 gear reduction, so it spins the motor with ease. All the wiring connections are also on the bottom, which makes things much easier to work with. The factory connections are on the top, which is not always an easy place to get to.

You can get one from Summit or 4WPW for around $140. Costs more, but well worth the money.

    Re: Starter Replacement

I would stay away from the autozone starters if I were you. Just spend the extra money for a good one and get it over with. I have so much practice replacing starters it's not even funny.

I got a new starter from Pep Boys, and with stock exhuast it will try to lockup from heat. I have a Tilton that I will be putting on when I install my headers. /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif
