Do any of the 69-72 Blazers need steering box braces? Or did GM build the frames right on these trucks?

I don't know of an off-the-shelf brace, and I've seen very few '69-'72s with cracked frames at the steering box. I know that the guy who owned my Blazer before me was an idiot with it and mine's not cracked. Then again, it had 32s on it. Bigger tires might need the brace.

Thanks Steve, I know they make them for the 73-87 trucks, but I was just wondering.

    79Chevy,

I am wondering the same thing too...I've got a '72, and I know that once the frame cracks it is a LOT more work to repair it and then brace it.....than if you just braced it in the first place!

I was hoping to get up to some 38"s on mine, so I'd really feel better knowing there was a brace there for some extra insurance.

'69-'72 frames are not notorious for cracking like the '73 and up trucks, but they will crack. The '73-up brace is two pieces. One piece is welded to the side of the frame and sandwiched between the frame and the steering box, the other piece is welded under the frame. You can use the piece that goes between the frame and box on a '69-'72. We called the manufacture (don't remember the company name but we bought it at 4wheelparts) and they told us that half of it would fit. We put one on my friends '69 K-5 and it fit great. Just make sure you follow the welding instructions, they're very specific. You can fabricate a piece to go on the bottom. My hasn't cracked. But I have heard that the 3/4 ton frames are heavier duty? Anyone else heard that?

  6. As far as I know, the 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton frames are the same on the 67-72's. The 1 ton frame is definitely beefier.

Some 71 and 72 blazers came with a factory steering brace, I have no idea why the blazers got them and the trucks did'nt.

Mine's got a factory brace on it... but was wondering do any of you guys know if I would need the other piece to go on the other side.... because my factory brace is inside the frame rails and the other piece I was talking about was between the box and the frame... any of you think I may need that or not?
