Can I use an 81-91 column on my 73-80 truck? I know the box changed, but is the fitting on the end of the column that goes onto the shaft the same? Any other changes?

    I believe you can interchange.
The connection between the shaft and the column is the same I believe, it's different at the box side.
I will confirm tomorrow I have a 76 and an 83 sitting in the back yard.
Too lazy to do it now.

As far as the connection between the column and the steering shaft there are 2 different ones and I believe from 73-79ish are splined on the steering column end and then 1980-1991 are double D style. There is also wiper/hi beam on column or on dash.

I had to pull one out of the junkyard & I learned a bit via trial & error.
Check the wire harness to make sure the wire colors match, also check the turn signal & tilt to make sure it's the same. The first one I got didn't exactly match & I had to take it back. The second one I pulled was close enough that I combined parts & made it work.

I forgot about the high beam switch.

And you know, I've seen the shorter column, but I thought it mighta come from a car or something.

So, duly noted, measure and watch for electrical configuration. Thanks guys!

well i put a 1986 (or 85 forget). fullsize gmc jimmy steering column in my '78

really it all worked great.. only thing i had to do differently was take the wires from the floor dimmer and move them to the column. Since i had the other truck i cut all plugs to keep connectors...

then for a few years i had the wipers working but not the squirters.... seems that the squirters just simply ground the hot through it and wheni rewired with the ez-wiring kit.. now they work...

all this to tear it back apart and stuff into a 1980 k30 crew... (yup bankin on that WA crew!!!!!!!!!!)

the high beam switch is easy, the wires from the column reach the floor if you need to re-wire it.

some would say this is a minimal upgrade... i personally will never own another old school chevy with the old column.. i love the wipers and highs on the column.. simple but nice... :thumb:

I was looking at a 1973 C10 the other day that had the new steering column it it. The wipers and high beam switch were still both in their original locations and functional.

I am well aware of that. I was saying it can be done.
