What do you guys think of stinger bumpers or large pre-runner bumpers? I was going to have 4x4iron make me a stinger bumper but not sure if having part of the bumper 24-26" out in front would be such a good idea for climbing straight up and down rock faces, so now not sure what I want. Tim is making an awesome stinger bumper for someone on this site and it looks real good mocked up on the UAV just not sure it would be good for Moab terrain or not, anyone have neagative experiance with a stinger type bumper?

I would just keep the stinger at the same angle or a greater angle then your approach angle. That way it shouldn't ever get in the way.

If I understand the stinger it's supposed to keep the rad from getting wrecked in a roll over right? So why does it need to be out at such an angle? Couldn't it be angled closer to the front of the truck...kinda hybrid between pre-runner and a full out stinger?

Maybe I just don't get it...if not please fill me in. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif

The prerunner bumpers are made to act as a skidplate when your going through woops, that is why they stick out so far. If I were you I would still run one because they look awesome, but just run it so the stinger isnt mounted so far down and inhibiting your aproach angle.

Some, but very few act as skid plates, but for the common stinger i.e. DP_90K5 and BigJ are supposed to act as protection for the radiator and components in case of a roll. If the "flavor of the week" stinger (Rene... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif) was used as a skid plate, that would be one hell of a whoop due to the angle of the stinger/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I think the ones like DP_90K5 or BIGJ are more of a prerunner type which is how I might do mine, the stinger is supposed to help damage in a rollover but lets face it, if a K5 rolls over, the hood etc are goners anyway, works a lot better on a Jeep.

Keith put one on his rig. Looks pretty good. I'd just be worried about ripping the sides out and busting the back windows of Mini vans and excursions in the mall parking lot. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

I've been out with quite a few people who have hung up on their pre runner bumpers. Those keeping the angle tight and flush have been good though. Making it even or more (closer to vertical) than the angle from the bottom of the front tires to the front most part of the frame rail has been a good all around setup from what I've seen. Especially having run each kind.

Re: Stinger/pre-runner bumper VS other bumpers

I went through the same issues when I built my bumper. Basically I didn't want a huge heavy bumper that killed my approach angles. I also didn't think that a stinger would help out too much in a rollover either unless it's braced really well like this [IMG]
Even then it's gonna kill your approach angle and if you do roll, I think your gonna have lots more damage than just the radiator /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So I just wanted something light, strong, that would hold a winch and still have a good approach angle. That's why I went with the prerunner style. Just my .02

Is that my bumper that he's building? Post a pic! I'm dying to see it! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I wanted the stinger as we do a lot of snow and mud and it can be real handy to grab onto when fooling around in front of the truck.

Ok,
Here is Fox's truck with each bumper on it. What do you think looks best?
By the way Matt, the stinger one is yours /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It is shipping tomorrow.
The stinger bumper is for a truck with 3" body lift, so it is not a perfect fit on Fox but you will get the idea.

This is one like is on mine, but made for the late models. It is going on I_4x4's rig.

Re: Stinger/pre-runner bumper VS other bumpers

I believe another use of a stinger is for a head over heel roll over or at least prevention. I think the reason it comes out like that is so a strap can be attached and the spotter can add a little pull on the front in sticky situations to help try to prevent a roll.

I like it. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I thought htat you were going to add a stinger to what was already there. You basically rebuilt the whole thing with the stinger in it and it looks good. The only thing that I might do is weld on some points so the I can put on some clevis mounts. Like the rear one.

Looking forward to it! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
