    Stock tach doesn\'t read accurately

I have a '77 K5 with the stock tach that reads about 2000 RPM higher than the motor is going. At idle it reads about 2500 RPM. While driving 65 down the freeway the needle is almost all the way around to the zero. Is it junk or can it be fixed. I would like to keep the stock tach in.

I have the same problem. I asked about it a few weeks ago. Aparently there are 2 springs in the tach to return it to 0. one or both could be worn or broken, these are not a owner servicible item.

So is this something the dealer would fix then? Or any other mechanic - I have the same problem in my '72 K5 - and my '75 stock tach has also been acting up lately

I think you'll get the run around from GM. The service manual nor parts books list the tach at all. Probably an unserviceable item..it breaks, you just replace it. Mucle car tach rebuilders are probably the best bet!
