Hey gang I currently have a homemade pull out drawer that is only accessable when the tailgate is down. It is the full length from side to side and gate to back of seat. It raised my floor about 8" in the back. I've got so much crap to carry the damn thing is heavy too pull out and not easyly accessable when off camber on a trial.
I want a permanet type mounted Tool/parts box bolted to the foor or mounted in someway.
Any ideas? What do you all use?
I carry a mini Napa store with me and ALL my tools.
What about one of thoes P/U bed boxes for like a S10? might bee too big, I don't whant it to take up beer cooler space and camping gear needs to go back there too......
Thanks for your ideas..

A friend with a K5 took a LARGE surplus military ammo can, welded on some angled tabs to the bottom, drilled a couple holes in them, and used large quick pins (drilled out to accept small padlocks) to mount it to the floor. He also modified the top latch to accept a padlock. Very secure, watertight, and easy to remove when necessary. I will most likely use the same setup in the back of my 'Burban.

I'm going to get a small tool box that has the little deals so you can tie them down (they have like a little bar built into them...hard to describe) and put some of those hide-a-hook deals in the bed of my blazer and strap it down. I want mine to be removable.
How much room is there on the sides? Maybe you could build two tool boxes that can stand upright and use the space in the sides or something?

Don't hit me, Mr. Moderator... I'll go back on topic... I swear![IMG]

Hmmm, well I have my highlift on one side and my gastank filler neck is on the other. My cage's rear legs come down back there too, so my sides are probly not an option. Someday I may move the Highlift to the outside??
removable tool box is probly a good idea incase the tools are needed far away from my rig, hmmmmm ideas ideas......

Do a search in the archives. I know there have been a few threads in the past with pics of them. That or maybe some members can post some pics here. I like that ammo cans... look great for anyone that goes around with the top off alot. I'm debating some of the same issues.

I did try a search but this database is getting VERY LARGE so makes it tuff to weed thru it all..

Yup I'm full convertable 365days a year (soft top) so I like the sealability of an ammo box it's just they are to damn small. But now there may be a LARGE version I need too look for[IMG]

You can find the large ammo cans at your local gun show, oops, I mean "Western Memorabilia Show".[IMG]

If you are interested, I can get photos of the ammo can installation and post them. Just let me know.

look for rocket boxes and stuff, they tend to be larger than the ammo cans.

OK, I'll get the digicam over to take the photos, probably tomorrow.

Just a guess, but I would estimate the dims at 10"W x 24"H x 30"L. He has it mounted on the driver's side of the rear section, behind the rear seat. Easily accessible with or without the tailgate down.[IMG]

Here's a good online supplier of all things mil surplus, they have many ammo cans. http://www.galleria-e.com/cgi-bin/Colemans.storefront/Home They also provide dimensions.

Go to "View Catalog", then "Containers"

The military cans you're looking for are called "20mm ammo cans" (named for the 20mm gun ammunition they stored in a former life...). In the one I carry full-time in my truck I've got--1 gallon jug of antifreeze/water, 2 qts motor oil, 2 qts ATF, 1 pint PS fluid, 1 pint brake fluid, a few cans of WD40, belt dressing, and carb spray, some small tools, couple pairs of gloves, a bunch of chemlites and an MRE. It all fits with the lid on, when it's carefully packed. The dimensions stated above are about right.

If you go surplus-store hunting for these cans (or any other ammo cans), be sure to inspect the lids very carefully. I've seen and heard of a few shady surplus'ers selling lids with no seal or a seal that's damaged to the point of uselessness. Bad seal=not waterproof, and no seal=lids that rattle incessantly.

Check out www.colemans.com. In their print catalog, they've got the 20mm cans, and a taller version of the same can. If you'd like, I'll take a pic or three of the can and lid so you can see how to mod it to put padlocks on it (the 20mm can). Unless you want to use some sort of cable setup, you'll need two padlocks per can, since the lids have latches on both ends.
Let me know if you're interested in those pics.

Ken
