Things started out OK...although i was bust gouging and cutting up a structure we had subbed out. It was pretty messed up and still might end up being scrap. We don't really have any time to fix it, but building a whole new one would take even longer.

Anyways, just after lunch I was using my cold chisel on this one section. Gave the chisel a smack with the hammer (like i've done about 10,000 times before) and out of the blue my right hand is just gushing blood. I didn't hit it with the hammer and didn't feel anything...so i was confused and a little shocked at how bad it was bleeding. Went to the first aid room and wahsed it off and ran it under the water for a while, and eventually saw the source of the problem. It was a little cut about 1/4" long between my thumb and fore finger. Thing was it looked really deep. At this point i was still confused but was developing a theory. The first aid guy chucked a band-aid on it and at that point I told him we needed to go look at the chisel.

We walked back to where I had been working and sure enough there is a chunk missing on the top of the chisel and the fracture is fresh. Before anyone jumps to any conclusions I keep my chisels and punches dressed...I'm very aware of the potential when they're not maintained and regularly dressed. Anyways, at that point i was about 95% sure the chunk missing off the chisel was now buried in my hand. :doah: At least at this point it still didn't hurt...

Went to the ER, through triage, then on to the treatment area where I waited another hour.

I explained to the doc what I had done and told him I was pretty sure there was a chunk of steel inside my hand. He gives me the old "yeah, yeah, W/E". I insisted on an x-ray...

I got back from X-ray and when the Doc saw it he apologized...there it was clear as day. It looked like a small bullet embedded in my hand. Unfortunately I know he isn't going to be able to pluck the chunk out through the neat little 1/4" hole it made going in. So, he froze it up and opened the cut up to about an inch long and started digging. 20 minutes later I get so grossed out I almost pass out  and he gives up.

He chucked in 4 stitches to hold it together until the plastic surgeon sees me on Monday. Needless to say with all the scalpel escavating he did it's pretty sore now.

No pic's, and I'm not likely to take any...just sharing my lovely day with y'all. :p:

Oh how wonderful for you!! Cut my finger down to the bone once about two hours before I went on stage back in highschool. Ran to the emergency room, got stitched up and was back in time for the performance.

During the show I ripped out the stitches, bled all over the stage and had to go back to the e.r. where the same doctor yelled at me and had to put twice as many stitches to prevent me from doing it again.

I've had two similar experiances and still have a chunk of steel in my wrist and one in my bicep. They are just under the skin so you can feel them and with a strong enough magnet I can pull the skin away from my arm. It really freaked a freind's son out:haha:

If I can I'll ask for a copy of the Xray...at the very least I'll save the chunk they remove.

I've had that chisel for at least 5 years and have used it hundreds of times. As soon as it starts to mushroom i dress the end on the bench grinder...

My theory is I might have unintentionally hardened the end when cleaning it up making it more brittle than it's supposed to be. It has been at least 6 months since the last time I dressed the end though. It was Craftsman, not some piece of Chinese crap.

    I believe you do.

    It's called taxes, right?

Unless you guys have a different way of financing it. The money is coming from somewhere.
