This is all on my 10-bolt front axle. I picked up my donor axle to swap under the front of my Jimmy because it has the gears I need. I got to thinking, could I just take out the gears, carrier and pinion shaft and swap that into my existing axle? Do I have to worry about shimming and all the other stuff associated with a rear gear swap or is it something a shade-tree mechanic can do? Or would it be better to just swap in the complete axle?

    Thanks
    Ross

You will still have to set backlash and pinion depth and run a pattern just like any gear install... Your better off switching the whole axle out unless you have the equipment to do the gear install.

I agree, you will have to ck/reshim center section. If you can't do that, swap the axel.
